Holy Virgin Church, CA

Concrete,
 

 To support a local community of Russian and Greek Orthodox Christians of humble means but with a desire for a traditional cross-in-plan domed church, the design used concrete block, (the same materials used in government housing projects), exposed concrete, (used in making sewer pipe) and exposed heavy timber (used in barns). The architectural detailing on these simple low-cost materials, which includes patterned forms and tile inlay, elevate them to become the final finish.
